What is the importance of photography in your health? Why does someone start photographing? I bet you, there are countless answers to these questions.
Some of these answers can be disgusting, such as:
“I started because I want to be to be famous.”
As if all photographers were famous. Or it may just be a simple answer:
“I started because I didn’t know what to do and I thought photography could work.”
And we often see answers like this:
“I started because it makes me feel good, I don’t what it is but I like it”
And it’s on top of this last answer that we’re going to work today. I’m going to try to show you the importance of photography in your health, even if you don’t want it as a profession. These a things, situations and feelings that worked for me or I realized that there are good in someway to health.
I started shooting because I needed something in my life that would make me forget the world for a few minutes. I worked in more than one place, and these jobs were very exhausting for me, physically and especially mentally.
I wish at least a piece of my week could be enjoyed without having the responsibility to deliver something on time or to meet certain expectations other than mine. I needed peace.
So, photography brought to my life a lot of positives, not only in the fateful moment, the moment where the photo happens but also in things that will stay with me for the rest of my life. In the next few lines,
I will show some of the points that photography helped me, and still help, and you can decide for yourself the importance of photography in your health.
What is the importance of photography in your health ?
Have the satisfaction of performing something that makes you happy
Health is a very extensive topic, and when we talk about mental health this gets even more complicated. But we almost always have a point where we can agree, happiness is a great way to keep healthy.
There are many things we can do to make us happy and of course healthier, you just need to define which are the most important concerns in your life. Health, money, happiness and the list can go on, these are all valid concerns.
For me the concern was to keep my mind occupied with something that gives me satisfaction of doing or performing something, an activity, a hobby.
Photography was my hobby of choice, it came into my life as a form of “treatment” and ended up becoming something that I cannot live without today.
I brought into my life the happiness of performing something. Planning, executing and contemplating the results were traits that I was somewhat missing or lacking in my life and photography ended up bringing this to the table to all areas of my life. It was not just a hobby, it was a life improvement.
So doing something you like is extremely important to your health, it doesn’t have to be photography specifically, but it has to be something you like. When someone does something just for the pleasure of doing, just for the enjoyment, it is most certainly that your health will follow the lead of your mind.
The worst part of facing something you need in your life is finding the motivation to do it. Like when you know you need to exercise but never find the right time to go to the gym.
Or when you know you have to wake up early, but you keep pressing the snooze button. Finding that motivation is difficult, especially nowadays where we are socially required/pressed to have a good job, good health, good mind, good looks, and the list goes on and on.
In photography is the same thing, you will have to put yourself in situations which you will have to be motivated if you will not give up quickly.
With a lot of theories to learn, expensive equipment to buy, and a multitude of things, only with a lot of motivation to jump on the boat of photography. But this will teach you that motivation usually pays its price back when the results start to appear.
Using this motivation you will start to see the world in a new way, after all, you have been training this with your photography. The importance of this in a person’s life is enormous, after all, seeing the world differently leads you to make decisions that you wouldn’t normally make. This will make you take risks, but it will also make you reap beautiful fruits.
Control your emotions
Some people have a very wrong relationship with their own emotions. Like that person who thinks he’s the calmest person in the world when in the reality he’s intolerant, anxious, and disturbed by anything.
Controlling these emotions is practically a life mission for many people, and not always successfully. I always had problems with my eagerness to finish things as soon as possible, but this is not always the best way possible, for me good work was work done. But look, life is much more than completing tasks, and in photography, not everything happens in our time and in your terms.
Photography has taught me a lot in this sense, helped me control my often unsubstantiated anxiety, and brought me to a place where I know that not everything is under my control. Just imagine me fighting with the sun over its changes of position before I took the picture.
Balancing your emotions makes you a much better person at the end of the day, everyone wins and the fruit of this will be a job that will please everyone.
Photography had and has a very important role for my growth because nothing will happen just in my time or the way I would like to. Controlling all these emotions helps you control your expectations. This is something very valuable for all aspects of your mental health.
The power of discoveries
Discoveries are great, a way to make you interact with the world differently. The most common way to put yourself in this kind of situation is to travel physically put yourself in a new place and from there try new foods, lifestyles, and everything.
But you can’t always travel around the world looking for new ways to be happy, because maybe all these new discoveries are just under our noses. New parks around town, new coffee places to visit, we can name a lot of discoveries that we can do inside our home town. We have lots of options to mentally discover things as well, like memories and let it be transport us to that moment, even if mentally, it has enormous power on our minds.
I love music, and it’s very easy to see myself travelling the farthest places when I’m listening to music. And you know the new love of my life, photography. It does the same thing to me, when I take part of my time to appreciate the work of some photographer I find myself in the same mental situation as when I’m listening to a great song. This state of discovery is great for those who want to some time escape from the “everyday things”. Photography can take you to amazing places, just allow yourself.
Learning that the world is made from more than one point of view is something that every young man and woman should have in mind, it’s not just his side or my side of the history that’s right. I don’t say this with the knowledge of years of study, I speak this with the simple desire to try to understand and be understood.
And in photography, perspective is something very important. Every photographer looks for a new way to show the same thing, or sometimes tries to show something mundane a new purpose. This is all part of the search process that we all have in life, photography is just the vehicle in which we decided to show the results.
We are always in search of something, whether it is a way of demonstrating something, or of trying to explain a certain situation and putting focus on situations to bring with the intention to brings new life to something. The idea is always to share your opinion with people who participate in this trajectory with you.
If you have any ideas in your head, please turn it into reality as much as possible, show what your perspective on the subject is. This will make you happier and consequently healthier. And the best thing is you can do this using the media you have available, photos, song, paintings, drawing, etc…
For many photographs it is just a shallow form of art, for others, it’s just a way to be famous, and for many, it doesn’t have that much value after all. But we can translate enormous mental manifestations of an artist through its photography.
It grows a lot of things we don’t realize at first. It stimulates thought, inspiration, and dreams. It makes you more aware of your environment and helps you others around you, it makes you more focused. It helps you see the world from a different perspective and helps you convey to the world your perspective of things.
All of this together can help you be a better person, a better photographer, a better artist. Knowing the importance of photography in your health will help you have a much happier and more productive life.
